Caloundra Things to See and Do

Mary Valley Rattler

Mary Valley Rattler

All aboard! A nostalgic train journey aboard an old “rattler” (steam train) through the scenic Mary Valley will make its debut in Autumn 2018.

Old Gympie Station will open 5 days per week (Wednesday – Sunday) at the end of December. Here you can explore the specialty retail shop, museum and café restaurant. On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays enjoy a steam train demonstration, where you can learn all about firing and preparing the engine as well the amazing complexity of these grand old machines.

Come along to the Mary Valley Rattler Family Fun Day on Saturday 16 December. Bring the kids for a fun-filled day with Santa, treats and of course the C17 974 steam locomotive which will be proudly displayed. This will also give visitors the opportunity to have a sneak peek at Old Gympie Station and the amazing transformation it has undergone.

From Autumn 2018 your will be able to take a journey through the picturesque Mary Valley, and into the days of yesteryear on one of the lovingly restored steam trains.

The historic 40 kilometre Mary Valley journey starts at Gympie and, after crossing the Mary River, negotiates an abundance of curves, gradients and bridges to pass through the small country villages of Dagun, Amamoor and Kandanga to Imbil. The railway line and Gympie station date back to pre-1880.

Gympie is 97 kilometres from Caloundra and it’s definitely worth a day trip to explore this historical gold mining city. For more news on the Mary Valley Rattler visit their website here.
